James is doing everything we ask of someone who wants to be independent. He works hard, shows up, pays his bills, and keeps pushing forward, even when life feels overwhelming. But right now, working hard simply isn't enough to make the numbers work.
James is a hardworking man in his 50s who lives independently in Columbus, Indiana. He also lives with high-functioning autism and generalized anxiety disorder, which can make the everyday stresses and uncertainties of life especially difficult to manage. Despite these challenges, James works full-time and has been dedicated to the same employer for more than 2.5 years. He is incredibly proud of his independence, and those of us who know and care about him want to help him hold onto it.
Each month, nearly every dollar James earns is already spoken for. Rent, electric, his car payment, car insurance, food, and gas leave very little for groceries, household necessities, or unexpected expenses. Living paycheck to paycheck is stressful for anyone, but for someone already managing severe anxiety, that constant financial worry can become overwhelming.
One expense James simply cannot eliminate is his car. He works second shift and often doesn't get off until around 10 p.m., after city bus service has ended for the night. His car isn't a luxury—it is what allows him to get to work, support himself, and remain independent.
James still owes just over $7,000 on his car loan, with a monthly payment of $278. Without that payment, he would have an additional $278 every month for groceries and basic necessities like toilet paper, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and laundry detergent. That's more than $3,300 a year that could go toward simply meeting his everyday needs.
That's why I'm asking our community to help us pay off James's car. Every dollar raised will go toward his car loan, with additional payments made each month until we can hopefully pay it off in full. I hope that, together, we can make that happen by Christmas.
Imagine being able to tell James this Christmas that the $278 payment he has worried about month after month is gone. Paying off his car wouldn't just eliminate another bill—it would give him breathing room, reduce an enormous source of anxiety, and help protect the independent life he has worked so hard to build.
James isn't looking for an easy way out. He gets up, goes to work, pays his bills, and keeps trying. He is doing his part. Now, I would love for our community to come together and do ours.
If 700 people gave just $10, we could raise $7,000. Whether you can give $10, $20, $50, or whatever your circumstances allow, every donation will bring James closer to owning his car outright. If you aren't able to donate, please consider sharing his story. A simple share could help us reach someone who can.
Sometimes changing someone's life doesn't require changing everything. Sometimes it simply means removing one burden, so they have the strength and resources to keep carrying the rest.
This Christmas, let's help James pay off his car, give him some much-needed breathing room, and help a hardworking man continue doing what he wants more than anything-remain independent.
Thank you for donating, sharing, and reminding James that while he works hard to stand on his own, he doesn't have to face every struggle alone.
