My name is Jalisa, and I am a mother and caretaker. Right before Christmas, my apartment in a new building flooded, and it has turned our lives upside down. As the sole caretaker, I’ve been doing my best to provide for my family. The flood has been overwhelming, especially as I try to care for my children and manage everything on my own.

My youngest children are 4 years old and 9 months old—the youngest whom I am still breastfeeding. The water damage has ruined my mattress and my children's mattress. My baby's walker was ruined, and the pack and play has molded and is no longer safe to use. Some of our clothing has molded, and the smell in our apartment is unbearable. We’ve lost food, and our belongings are scattered everywhere. We still don’t have a date for repairs to begin. I’m hesitant to return to our unit because of the exposed walls and the safety risks for my children and our emotional support cat, Gracie. I don’t have a regular 9-to-5 job right now because I’m caring for my baby and breastfeeding, and I don’t have support for school pickups and drop-offs. Every day feels like a struggle to find some sense of normalcy and safety for my family.

Because of my safety concerns, I reached out to the department of buildings to complete an inspection, and they found the unit to be in violation of two infractions accompanied by fines. This experience has really taken a toll on my mental stability, and I am doing everything I can to stay strong for my children. Your support would mean so much to me in a world of uncertainty and turmoil. It’s encouraging to know that people can still be caring and have sympathy for others in need. Any little bit helps and is much appreciated for me and my family.
