Help Jalileh Get to Oxford
Hello everyone,
My name is Jalileh García. I am Honduran, a human rights scholar / advocate, and low-income. I need your help raising funds for my studies at the University of Oxford!
My Story
On April 30th, I graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor's degree in Human Rights with a specialization in Latin American and Iberian Cultures.
Throughout my time at Columbia, I was a part of the executive boards of various student organizations such as Alianza, the Baha'i Club, Latinx Heritage Month (LHM), and the Columbia Students for Human Rights (CUSHR). I also served as a Staff Writer for Rights Views. At Columbia, I maintained a 3.77 GPA and was awarded the Myra Kraft Prize for Exceptional Practical Experience in Human Rights Advocacy by the Institute for the Study of Human Rights.
During the past 4 years, I received full financial aid as a low-income student. I have also worked two part-time jobs for the majority of my time at Columbia to afford personal expenses, flights back home, etc.
I'm proud and happy that I have been accepted at the University of Oxford for a Master's in Science in Nature, Society, and Environmental Governance. It is a 1-year program at the School of Geography and the Environment. Through this Master's, I hope to enhance my Human Rights background with Environmental Social Sciences to best serve communities across the world. In particular, I hope to use this degree to best support many communities and environmental defenders in my home country of Honduras in their struggles against human rights and environmental violations.
The cost of attendance at Oxford is approximately £40,000, which is approximately $56,765. To offset some of the costs, I have received the Harry J Carman Fellowship that provided me with $22,000. I am continuing to work at my part-time job and am set to begin a full-time internship to help raise funds for my studies at Oxford. Additionally, I have been saving money from my two part-time jobs at Columbia. With this amount, I hope to reach the tuition, which amounts to $35,900.
I am asking for your help to raise $20,000 (£14,100). This amount will go towards food, accommodation, books, and personal expenses. I have gathered this estimate from Oxford Living Cost estimates provided by the university.
Your help would enable me to achieve my professional, academic, and personal goals and give me the necessary skill-set to support and help others. I am unable to work in the UK for the duration of the time I am there. As such, these funds will help me successfully complete my studies without incurring debt, stress, and will allow me to focus on my studies.
I am so grateful for this opportunity and it would mean so much if you could support me. Thank you so much!
