A few weeks ago, our world was turned completely upside down.
My 17-year-old grandson, Jake, was in a horrific motorcycle accident that left him with multiple broken ribs, several fractured vertebrae, a broken leg, and a shattered pelvis.
After four major surgeries, doctors were thankfully able to repair what they could — but Jake’s recovery will be long, painful, and incredibly difficult. He faces a year or more of rehabilitation, learning to walk again, and countless hours of physical therapy just to regain basic independence.
Right now, Jake can’t even sit up on his own. He lives in constant pain, relying on his parents for everything — from eating and bathing to simply moving from his bed to a chair. For the next several months, he’ll need to be homeschooled, as attending high school in person isn’t possible. He can’t even go upstairs to his own bedroom, something most of us take for granted.
This tragedy came at the worst possible time. Jake’s father — my son-in-law — was recently laid off from his job of 16 years, and the family is now struggling to stay afloat under the crushing weight of medical bills, hospital stays, physical therapy, and transportation costs.
Despite it all, Jake remains determined. Before the accident, he dreamed of becoming a mechanical engineer in the military, serving his country and building a better future. Now, his fight is to simply stand, walk, and live without unbearable pain.
Our family is doing everything we can, but the financial burden is beyond what we can manage alone. We’ve set a goal of $15,000 to help cover the mounting medical, surgical, therapy, and daily living expenses during Jake’s long road to recovery.
