On September 26th, 2019, my brother-in-law, Jacob (a.ka. Jake) Wendel, went to the doctor to what he and his wife (my sister), Nadia, thought was Appendicitis. But their world was turned upside down, when they received the terrible news that he has Appendix Cancer. In addition to that, the doctor found several tumors on his abdominal wall. His appendix was removed, but the doctor said he would need to see on Oncologist to remove the tumors.
Today, November 13th, he is having a procedure called "Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC), at the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. To remove the tumors on his abdominal wall, and to explore and see if there are more. It is an intense procedure which can take 10-12 hours.
Jake and Nadia have been happily married for 18 years. They have two wonderful sons, Josue (17 yrs old), and Caleb (14 yrs old). Jake is the main provider for his family, but with this challenging disease, he will not be able to work for at least 6 months. This will be detrimental to Jake and his family; not only physically and emotionally, but also financially. Even so, when I told them I wanted to open a GoFundMe page, they did not want me to. They feel bad asking others for financial help. However, they really do need all the help they can get during this trying time. Jake is self employed, therefore, he doesn't get paid time off, sick days or paid medical leave. If he doesn't work, he doesn't make money. There is no way they will be able to stay afloat with all their day to day bills, and on top of that, with all the additional medical expenses they will incur during Jake's long and strenuous recovery.
From the bottom of my heart, I ask for your help. Any amount you can contribute would be of tremendous help. During this time, they should only have to worry about Jake's long road to a full recovery. And I'm hoping to make that just a little bit easier by creating this page.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you could support Jake and his family by making a donation and then sharing it with your network, we would greatly appreciate it.
