Hi friends,
We’re reaching out on behalf of our friend Jaime, who recently suffered a life-changing accident while ice climbing. On January 8th, what began as a normal day in the mountains quickly turned into a life-threatening situation, requiring a complex rescue involving the incredible teams at KMR and STARS.
During the climb, a large amount of ice broke loose and struck Jaime’s right shoulder, causing severe injuries. Thanks to the help of his friend Grant Stewart, he received immediate evacuation and emergency surgery to save both his life and his arm.
Jaime’s father flew immediately from Barcelona to be by his side in Canada. He spent the first two weeks with him in the hospital, supporting him through the most critical phase after surgery, and then remained in Canmore for over a month to help with his early recovery at home.
He sustained a severe brachial plexus injury affecting his right arm and hand. At this time, he has lost function in his right arm and is facing a long and uncertain recovery. He will need additional surgeries and extensive ongoing rehabilitation.
As a long term Canmore resident, mountains mean it all to Jaime, being his way of understanding life. For years, climbing, skiing, and being outdoors have been at the center of his life and identity.
Above all, what he loved most was sharing his passion for the mountains with the people around him—his friends, partners, and community. That desire to connect and pass on that passion is what led him to pursue a path as a mountain guide, while also working as a ski patroller in Lake Louise.
Now, everything has changed, and he is currently in Barcelona with his family waiting for specialized neurosurgery, hoping for the best possible chance to recover any function to his right arm. The hope is that the neurosurgeon, through multiple surgeries, will help him recover the functionality of his biceps, triceps, forearm and hand. Since the accident, his right arm rests in a sling. This process will be long, physically demanding, and emotionally challenging.
He is at a new crux of his life, and he needs support from his community.
We’re creating this fundraiser to help Jaime with surgeries, medical care and rehabilitation costs so he can have the best chance to recover his arm and his life, with the dream of one day getting back to the mountains through the disciplines he loves and are a part of himself.
If you’re able to support him, thank you. And if not, sharing this means just as much.
We’ll keep everyone updated as Jaime moves through surgery and recovery.
Thank you for being part of this.
