My name is Jahdante Smith and for over a decade, I have been a relentless force for justice and positive change in Detroit. As a young father of two, I balance parenthood with freelance work for a number of non-profits, tackling environmental hazards that threaten residential neighborhoods and helping those in crisis find shelter and hope. But I'm more than an advocate— I'm a devoted member of the community, never afraid to ride the same public transportation I fight to improve. Even after losing reliable transportation, I continue to show up at city council and community meetings, supporting grassroots candidates and organizing residents. However, relying on public transit has made it increasingly difficult to be on time for meetings and other vital engagements where I can advocate for Detroiters. Despite deep knowledge of Detroit’s political landscape and repeated offers from powerful politicians to join their teams, I have always refused to compromise my integrity. Instead, I stand with the people—generally funding this vital work out of my own pocket, even when resources are scarce. Recently, my vehicle suffered catastrophic engine failure after logging 50,000 miles in a single year, Why Your Support Matters driving across Detroit to provide mutual aid, attending meetings, and responding to calls for help and even assisting others with minor vehicle repairs. Without reliable transportation, my ability to serve the community and be present for my sons is severely limited. I have displayed authentic leadership and dedication to making sure Detroit’s residents are heard on all levels, without allowing outside influence to sway or silence me. My community Impact from fighting for housing justice to supporting those in crisis, I have raised thousands of dollars for others, even when unable to do the same for myself. The work that I do is grassroots and the people I help often come to me without many resources and I help them regardless and generally do not charge them.
