Jada is my four-year-old pit mix, adopted from a shelter in San Francisco. She was abandoned as a puppy, and from the moment I met her, we instantly clicked—she chose me that day. Jada is gentle, shy, and full of energy, always greeting me at the door with a hug when I come home from work.
But a few days ago, I noticed her energy was gone. She stopped eating, her stomach started to expand, and she could barely get up. This morning, her breathing became short and labored, and she couldn't keep her eyes open. I rushed her to the vet, where they found her chest cavity was full of fluid, making it hard for her to breathe and eat. They drained three liters of fluid, which helped her breathe easier, but she was diagnosed with Chylothorax—a rare, serious condition where lymphatic fluid leaks into the space around her lungs.
Draining the fluid was only a temporary fix. Without surgery, the fluid will likely return, and she may not make it. The surgery costs are overwhelming, and I simply cannot afford that alone. Jada came into my life after I went through a rough and abusive relationship and lost my grandma. I was feeling lonely and isolated, and she brought me out of my darkest places. Without her, I would lose a huge piece of my heart.
