Hi, I'm Lacey, and I'm creating this GoFundMe on behalf of my little sister, Jacqui, who is fighting a rare and aggressive cancer with more courage than anyone I've ever known. Even now, as her cancer has returned and the road ahead is uncertain, she still insists that I move in with her so I can have family support while I go through my own gender transition. That's just who Jac is, always thinking of others first, even when she's the one in need.
Jac's Story
About a decade ago, Jac's life changed forever when she suffered a serious acquired brain injury while at work. After years of battling through rehabilitation and fighting her employer's insurer, she was finally able to settle in Aramac, Queensland, where she found peace and stability with her partner, Dave. They were ready for a quiet life together in their small country home. With the need for daily support, her partner, Dave, decided to become Jac's full-time carer to help her throughout her day. The decision could not have been more timely, as Jac's need a full-time carer would become more then either could have anticipated.
Last year, Jacqui began experiencing pain and complications in her lower abdomen. After surgery, including a hysterectomy, she was told everything looked clear, but soon after, came the devastating news that she had Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma. This rare cancer had already metastasised to her lungs.
Jacqui spent almost four months in Brisbane undergoing treatment. It looked like the tumours were shrinking, and she was able to return home to Aramac for a precious few months. At her next check-up, she got the news that the cancer had returned and the primary tumour had grown, and new ones had appeared in her left lung.
Now, chemotherapy is no longer an option. Jacqui's only hope may be a clinical trial at Townsville University Hospital named the Servier Laboratories Phase 1 Trial (S095035 MAT2A inhibitor), which is testing a new treatment for people with advanced or metastatic solid tumours. This is an early-stage study, meaning the therapy is experimental — but it's also a chance at hope.
Why We're Asking for Help
The trial requires Jacqui to travel over 800 kilometres from Aramac to Townsville for the first treatment cycle and stay there for up to a month while she's monitored. After that, she'll need to make monthly trips back to Townsville for scans, blood tests, and reviews.
While she can later claim travel reimbursements, these take months to process. Jacqui and Dave live on Centrelink benefits, and their limited income makes it impossible to cover these upfront costs. Your donations will help fund:
Travel and accommodation for Jacqui and Dave between Aramac and Townsville.
House modifications (such as ramps and bathroom adjustments) to make home life easier as her mobility declines, and general home improvements to provide a soothing environment for rest and recuperation.
Support equipment, such as a wheelchair or mobility scooter, if needed as treatment progresses.
Every day costs that pile up when a serious illness takes over, and they are spending days away and still pay their regular bills, such as fuel, meals, rates, electricity and the small things that help her maintain dignity and comfort.
Jacqui isn't on the NDIS yet because the process can take over a year, and time is not on her side.
Why This Means So Much
Jac has spent her life quietly helping others, never expecting much in return. Having worked in the Community Services sector, mainly with foster children and those at risk of homelessness. The incredible thing is that she's facing this enormous challenge just like every other thing she has in her life, and that is with grace, humour, and love for everyone around her. I want to give back to her, not just because she's my sister, but because she's the heart of our family. She deserves the chance to fight this with dignity and hope.
Every dollar you contribute will go directly to Jacqui's medical, travel, and home support needs. Even if we don't reach our full goal, your donation will still be put to use immediately to help her get to Townsville and begin treatment, if accepted onto the trial, or towards ensuring that she has everything she needs until the next option becomes available, which may be in February next year in Brisbane. The initial goal is set at $ 5,000, and as her circumstances change, we will update you and may increase the limit.
If you can't donate, please consider sharing this page to help us reach more people who might be able to. Every share, every word of encouragement, and every gesture of kindness matters.
Thank you for reading Jac's story and for standing beside her as she faces this next chapter.
With love and gratitude,
