Hi, my name is Therese Jackson- Smith and Jacqui “Jax” Baugh is my best friend, we met in the 1990’s when I worked in the Central Staffing at the University of Michigan Hospital and then reconnected when we were in Grad School.
As many of you know, Jacqui has been a caregiver her entire life. First in high school at Huron High School as an Athletic Trainer and peer facilitator, then she chose a career in Nursing and has selflessly dedicated her time as an ICU/ER/Flight nurse for 32 years. She has also been a fierce advocate for 17 years to those who are victims of domestic violence. If you know Jacqui, you know she is always quietly helping others.
Unfortunately, Jacqui has been fighting a very rare breast cancer since January, after a surgery that rendered her incapable of using her arms she has struggled immensely on her own. Jacqui has been a pillar of support for everyone in her life. Now it's our turn to stand by her side as she faces this unexpected challenge.
On November 25, 2024, Jacqui will undergo a 12-14 hour intensive and critical surgery by 3 Surgeons to remove the cancer and reconstruction. They will be doing a full bilateral radical mastectomy with an abdominal flap with an incision hip to hip including the fat, skin and blood vessels. There are many risks with her complicated health history, but it is necessary for her to have this surgery to save her life.
Any amount, no matter how small, will make a difference in Jacqui’s 6 -8 week recovery, and will help her focus on healing rather than the financial strain.
If you are unable to contribute financially, sharing this campaign with others means the world to us. Any unused funds will go towards helping other women with breast cancer at the Rogel Cancer Center.
The mounting medical bills will surely be overwhelming, and she'll be facing expenses that insurance doesn't fully cover. From surgeries, to physical therapy, medical equipment, unexpected travel costs, and daily necessities, the financial burden will become too much to bear alone. She is currently on a fixed income without additional resources.
We are humbly asking for your help to give Jacqui the best chance at a full recovery.
Thank you for taking the time to read Jacqui’s story. Your support, love and prayers are deeply appreciated as we work to help her regain her health and independence.
Together we are #Jax Strong.
With gratitude, on behalf of her family, myself, Jacqui and those who love her, thank you!
