I am honoured to share that I have been nominated to represent Canada at the 2025 Senior Pan American Championships in Monterrey, Mexico! This is an incredible opportunity to compete against some of the best wrestlers in the world and continue my journey towards international and Olympic success.
However, this year comes with an unexpected challenge—this opportunity is entirely self-funded. (Not partial*) The entire Trip is Self-Funded.
Due to ongoing funding uncertainties with Sport Canada, Wrestling Canada has announced that all international competition participation starting April 1, 2025, will be on a self-pay basis. This means that in order to compete, I must cover my own travel, accommodations, and competition expenses, as well as contribute to shared costs for coaching and support staff.
I have Shared a screenshot of the Expenses Breakdown Canada Wrestling shared with me. Amounting to a total of $2,900 CAD
How You Can Help
I am reaching out to my family, friends, and supporters to help me raise the necessary funds to make this competition a reality. Any contribution, no matter how small, will bring me one step closer to representing Canada on the international stage.
The Cost of this competition has been much more than expected. I am Training Full time Twice a day almost everyday and working 2 part time jobs to be able to afford the cost of living and transportation in BC. All and any help is greatly appreciated…
Your support will go directly towards covering these essential expenses and ensuring that I can compete at my best. If you are unable to donate, simply sharing this campaign with your network would mean the world to me!
Why This Matters
Competing at the Senior Pan American Championships is not just about one tournament—it’s about taking a step toward future World Championships and Olympic qualification. Every match is a chance to gain valuable experience, improve, and showcase Canadian wrestling on the international stage.
I am beyond grateful for your support and belief in me. Let’s make this happen together!
Thank you,
Jacob Alexander Torres
Words from Team Canada (Which I received via Email)
“As you may be aware, there has been ongoing uncertainty surrounding Sport Canada, the government agency responsible for providing funding programs in support of sport, and their 2025 funding amounts. At this time, funding amounts have not been released or communicated with WCL or other national sport organizations. The resulting delay in release of funding for the upcoming fiscal year has forced WCL to begin implementing contingency measures to assist with cash flow management. These measures are being put in place to prepare for the possibility of a significant decrease in funding or delays in funding beyond 1-2 months.
One of these measures involves all athlete international participation, starting on April 1, 2025, proceeding on a self-pay basis until further notice. To clarify, athletes will be responsible for covering the entirety of their own costs for international events, as well as sharing the costs among all athletes attending the event to support up to two (2) coaches, up to one (1) medical support staff member, up to one (1) team leader and up to one (1) referee for the Senior Pan American Championships.
We fully recognize the challenges these measures present and share your frustration with the current situation. Sport Canada is WCL’s primary funding partner, so delays or decreases in funding greatly impact the organization and its ability to conduct its regular activities. We are hopeful that this will be a temporary circumstance. Please know that we are doing everything we can to navigate these unprecedented circumstances and are committed to providing updates as soon as more information becomes available.”
