"Nine years ago, I asked for your help and you graciously came through. Because of recent circumstances I find myself in need of your help again.

Because of limited funds I have not been taking the proper care of my teeth. My Social Security barely covers my basic living expenses but it is just high enough to make me ineligible for Medicaid, leaving me with a level of Medicare that covers no dental. We all know how expensive dental care is, and I need a lot of it.

Also, I find that because of my strong desire to document my people, the NYC Downtown Queer Arts and Activist communities, I haven’t been paying enough attention to myself. I am forever running to catch an incredible performer or show, and/or engaging with fellow activists as we try our best to turn the tide against all the ugliness going down. In turn, I am not paying proper attention to me - and my health.

It's hard to ask for help when I know there are people in worse circumstances but when I feel my life being diminished, depression sets in and all my problems which are by themselves serious, begin to seem insurmountable.

I am seeking $25,000 for these dental expenses. The work I need includes multiple implants, extractions, root canals, bridges and permanent / temporary dentures.

I know I’m asking a lot, but I know it’s possible. I’ve seen miracles happen when our community comes together, and I’m hoping for one here. Let me just add that doing this -- having to ask for money in this way -- has thrown me about as far out of my comfort zone as I have ever been.

But as my dear friend Jane Friedman said “Jackie, this is what a community does. We help each other.” So, I’m taking this step. I’m asking you to help me by giving what you can, and getting the word out to others. Any donation is tremendously appreciated.
