Help Jackie Fundraise for Cancer Treatment

Hello, my name is Isabella and I am Jackie's daughter. My mother was diagnosed with Breast cancer in 2014. She received treatment, underwent several surgeries and was declared cancer-free. In 2018, she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Her cancer had returned. This was extremely heartbreaking for my mother, as she was and still is raising her youngest daughter, my sister, who is now 10 years old.

My mother has not stopped fighting for her life and she will not let cancer win. She is on her last chemotherapy treatment that OHIP covers. Her doctor suggested a new drug called ENHERTU that can help her cancer treatment. My mother's cancer is HER2-positive, which it what the ENHERTU drug targets. This new treatment has shown great results and we're hoping it can do the same for my mom. Unfortunately, my mom has been denied by OHIP to cover this new drug that can help her. ENHERTU costs an average of $9,000 every 21 days, and she will need 12 treatments.

My mother is an astoundingly strong woman who immigrated to Canada from Cuba to give her children the best life she could. Despite her cancer constantly trying to take her from us, she keeps fighting with a smile on her face. Everywhere she goes she makes people smile. She is the light of my life. Her only dream in life is to see her children grow up and lead in her footsteps.

Not only is my mother the best woman I know, but she is the kindest. She works at the Newcomer Centre of Peel (and still works!) helping new immigrants settle into our beautiful country. She welcomes new immigrants and refugees in hopes of helping them transition into a better life. Everyday after her appointments and treatments at the hospital, she comes home and works on her laptop, making phone calls to newcomers and setting up classes for them so they can excel in Canada.

My mother is the kind of woman I aspire to be.
