Stage 4 Prostate Cancer has spread into my Spine and Liver
Health Update on Jack Kuykendall
On August 13, 2024, an MRI from Simon Med Imaging showed that I had Stage-4 Prostate cancer that had metastasized into the spine and liver.
Something I have been treating for the last 4 months (as Sciatica) turns out to be far more serious.
Over the last four months I have been working with my primary physician and a pain management physician. When nothing was working a new MRI was done on August 8th. The new MRI showed extensive prostate cancer had entered my vertebra, spine and liver.
From 8-13 to 9-13 I lost 45 lbs (went from 185 to 140 lbs)
8-13-2024 Tuesday: I checked into Chandler Medical Center’s emergency for their Hospice care unit. All the doctors and nurses were extraordinary. During the next five days, numerous pain alleviating drugs were used to stop the nerve pain and start planning with the Ironwood Cancer & Research Center to begin treatment.
8-17-2024 Saturday: Checked out of Chandler Medical.
8-23-2024 Friday: Working with three Oncologist from Ironwood, a Hormone Therapy and Radiation Therapy program was scheduled.
8-26-2024 Monday: Hormone Therapy and 2-weeks of daily radiation have been implemented.
Since it was from the prostate, radiation therapy, hormone therapy (Erleada)and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) (Degarelix) can be effect and prolong life.
Erleada is a pill I take 4 times a day.
Degarelix is shot given in the abdomen once a month for 6 months.
The objective of all these treatments is to lower testosterone to zero. When that happens, the cancer stops spreading. It does not cure the cancer. It just stops it from advancing.
Erleada studies show that 65% of the men on this drug are still alive after 4 years.
Today, I have gained back 25 lbs. I lost approximately 70% of my strength.
I have started by exercising and go to LA Fitness every day.
I do exercise, hot tube and cool of in the pool.
Each day, I am gaining more strength.
I expect to be able to swing a golf club again by the first of November.
