As many of you know, my brother-in-law Jack has battled severe diabetes for years. He’s always done everything right—followed every doctor’s instructions, endured countless hospitalizations, a year on dialysis, and finally received a life-saving kidney transplant in 2023. Earlier this year he went on full disability, which meant he had to leave his full-time job and was bringing home almost nothing after paying for health insurance.
Renee, my sister, has been working nonstop to keep their family afloat, running her Etsy shop while job hunting, and she had just accepted a new position with benefits.
Then, on December 3, Jack was rushed to the hospital with a foot wound that had been treated for weeks but kept getting worse. The bones in his foot had become infected and necrotic, and on December 4 he had to have his big toe and part of his metatarsal amputated.
Jack had another surgery yesterday and thankfully everything went perfectly. The infection appears to be resolved, but he now needs a long course of IV antibiotics and must remain non-weight-bearing for at least six weeks. His doctor strongly recommends that he spend that time in a skilled nursing facility so he can get the care he needs and avoid complications.
The problem is that with Renee delaying her job start date, there is absolutely no income coming in. Jack’s disability covers almost all of their mortgage, but nothing else—no groceries, gas, copays, medical supplies, or the costs of this next phase of care. Our family is helping however we can, but it just isn’t enough.
If you’re able to help in any way—donations, meals, gift cards, or even by sharing their story—it would mean the world to us. Every bit lightens the load for Jack and Renee while he heals.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my sister and brother-in-law during this incredibly difficult time.
