Jack Oliphant, age 80, a retired pastor and writer for Roberts Wesleyan College, has spent numerous weeks in medical facilities during this world changing Corona virus. His initial admission was for a couple of medical conditions, but while in Strong Hospital, he was also diagnosed with stomach cancer.
This was a hard blow to the family and many friends. What made a terrible situation a tragedy, was the virus quarantine resulting in Jack being alone in the hospital and rehab.
How does one deal with such heartbreaking circumstances for both the cancer patient, and the family…with not being able to be together?!
Jack is vigorously doing all he can as a patient to fight it…but beds are needed for other patients due to the increasing demand of Covid-19 victims. He is being strongly encouraged to just go home; and deal with it as best he can...there really are no other options.
Jack, his family, and his cancer doctor all believe he needs to be somewhere that he can strengthen himself so he can continue on with the cancer treatments.
It’s a terrible situation to be in...where facilities are closing their doors to new clients; care givers provided through home care agencies are getting harder and harder to find; and Jack’s only real option is to go home...and hope that he gets the care he needs to keep him healthy and strong and moving forward.
The family has a Medicare insurance that does not cover caregivers for what they now determine as long-term care; and will only provide a small number of hours per week for caregiving. They are just now starting the process to be approved for Medicaid, but that takes months.
His devoted wife, Vi, close to his age, (I don’t want to be tortured for revealing it!) and the family … are doing all they can to provide care at home. But he is fully bedridden and needs 24 hour care.
We are starting this fundraiser to be sure there’s enough home care coverage to help Jack strengthen and move forward to fight this with all he can.
Family and friends are doing the best they can, but there are many gaps, which Vi gallantly and cheerfully covers to take care of her lifelong sweetheart. Actually … she is the 24/7 caregiver, and others assist when possible. Respite care and aides are needed to keep Vi healthy and safe as well.
Funds are also needed for the vast number of added medical costs for co-pays, supplies, medical equipment not covered by insurance etc. They also have a loss of income due to VI not being able to go back to her job as accompaniment pianist/teacher in the public school.
Some great individuals have expressed their willingness to be private paid aides in the home and help this couple. This is where we need people like you to reach out and give what ever you feel led to give. No amount is too big or too small!
After 57 years of marriage, this wonderful couple needs your help during this difficult time. They have poured out a lifetime of serving, giving, and caring for others.
Thank you for your consideration.
