Who I Am
My name is Jabari Allen. I'm a poet from South Side Chicago who has received fellowships, scholarships, and support from Tin House, Community of Writers, Kenyon Review Writers Workshop, Poets House, Virginia G. Piper Center, VONA, among other institutions. A two-time 2019 Best New Poets nominee, I have poems that either appear or are forthcoming in Colorado Review, Hayden's Ferry Review, Vinyl, Virginia Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. I am currently based in Phoenix, AZ.
Where I Hope to Be
I was accepted into two workshops this summer. The first being in Boulder, Colorado (the Summer Writing Program with the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics/Naropa University) and the second being in Provincetown, Massachusetts (Fine Arts Work Center ). I'll have the opportunity to workshop with both Roger Reeves and Nicole Sealey respectively. Thankfully I received full-tuition scholarships and lodging for both workshops, but I still have to consider costs for airfare, transportation, meals, and any possible emergencies. I am certain that attending these workshops will prove substantive to my writing as I work towards the completion of a chapbook and full-length manuscript of poems. Any help to get me there will be gratefully accepted.
How the Funds Will Be Used (Costs Combined)
Airfare: $1,200
Transportation: $500
Meals: $700
Emergency funds: $100
When
The Summer Writing Program in Boulder takes place June 9-15.
The workshop at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown takes place July 7-12.
I will need the funds to secure airfare ($1,200) as soon as possible.
Sample of Work
Thank you in advance for your support. I really do appreciate any and every donation. Below is a suite of poems I’ve had published in Virginia Quarterly Review followed by my personal website which includes a list of services I offer.
Peace,
JJ
