On Friday morning, May 22, 2026, at around 1:00 AM, I noticed that my nearly 3-year-old cat, Ivy, was struggling to breathe.
Ivy had previously been evaluated for what was thought to possibly be asthma, but her episodes had been infrequent and usually passed quickly. This time was different. She was lying on her side, clearly uncomfortable, and did not look okay. I immediately took her to the emergency vet, where she was given oxygen, had X-rays taken, and received medication.
The veterinary team confirmed that Ivy does have asthma. She needed emergency treatment and overnight hospitalization, and going forward she will need ongoing care, including inhaler medication as needed when she has wheezing or breathing episodes.
Ivy was at the emergency hospital for about 14 hours, and the bill came to just under $3,000. I’ve included a redacted copy of Ivy’s emergency hospital bill so people can see the cost of her treatment. Personal/account information has been removed for privacy.
Earlier this year, my department at work went through a reorganization and workforce reduction, and I was one of the people affected. I have been out of work since January. While I was able to pay Ivy’s bill, it was a significant hit to my finances during an already difficult time.
I created this GoFundMe in case any friends, family, or kind animal lovers are willing to help offset some of the cost of Ivy’s emergency care. I truly appreciate any amount, no matter how small. It means more than I can say.
Thankfully, Ivy is doing okay now. She has a follow up appointment with her regular vet on Thursday, June 4, and afterwards I will be filling two inhaler prescriptions for her. I already ordered and received a device made specifically for cats so I can administer her medication properly. She is also on liquid steroids for the next few weeks as part of her recovery.
I’ll post updates on how Ivy is doing. I am incredibly grateful to the wonderful team at the emergency animal hospital in Ellicott City for treating her with such care and compassion.
From Ivy and me, thank you so much for anything you can contribute, share, or even just for keeping her in your thoughts.
