On Friday 28 August, more than 200 of us were told by a short message that Ovom Care in Portugal had gone into insolvency. No warning. Women were mid-cycle, on hormone medication, days from embryo transfer. Our embryos, eggs and sperm were still inside the building. We had paid in full, many of us with life savings. To finish what we started, we now have to pay again at a new clinic. Most people cannot afford IVF twice. The Independent has told our story: Every pound donated goes straight to the new clinics treating affected patients, to fund the treatment we had already paid for.
