My name is Ita, and I was born on a mountain in San Esteban Atatlahuca, Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca. I am Mixtec, and my life has been shaped by the beauty and history of this place. Four years ago, I lost my family and nine friends who defended our mountain and forest. Since then, I have struggled with sadness, anger, and pain, unable to find work because of my health. The only thing that helps me feel better is growing my own food and sharing my Mixtec knowledge through art and crafts, but it is hard to find places to sell them.
The mountain is not just my home—it is an archaeological and ecological treasure. There is a map of it in the University of Princeton, New Jersey, showing its importance. Sadly, the forest is threatened by logging and violence, and I want to protect it and my people. If I can raise enough money, I hope to buy land in a climate like San Francisco, build an ecological house, and create a safe space to grow food and share my culture. The funds will also help me travel, study, and pay for professional tests in biology, anthropology, and archaeology to defend the mountain and understand the Princeton map.
I have spent years searching for help, but fear has kept me from asking until now. I wish to remain anonymous, but I am tired of trying alone. I want to protect the forest, no matter what. If you want to learn more, you can see part of the mountain's history here: https://youtu.be/ZdLPfg8Fr0Y?si=hxA-nIpV_DKeytlS. Your support will help me defend my heritage and environment, and I am grateful for any help you can give.
