Hi, my name is Israel Herrera, a passionate first generation college student diving into quantum photonics, nonlinear optics, and advanced computing to push the boundaries of science and make a positive impact on the world. I'm starting this GoFundMe to cover college tuition, medical expenses, and car repairs so I can reliably get to school and focus on my research internship and studies.

To give you an idea of what I work on, here is a picture of us using a crystal to convert an infrared laser into visible green via second harmonic generation. This is nonlinear optics, the applications range from transitioning lenses on prescription glasses, to medical and now computing. Optics holds the future of technology, it paved the way for things like LCD screens (Liquid Crystal Display) as well as self autonomous driving.

My work explores cutting-edge fields like silicon nitride waveguides, 2D materials, and quantum computing, aiming to unlock new technologies for sustainable progress. Beyond academics, I’m dedicated to inspiring others, like teaching my young niece and nephew to love math through creative, hands-on learning.

Balancing research, education, and personal challenges is tough. Your support will help me afford tuition, manage medical costs, and maintain my car for commuting to campus and my internship.
