Preserving Zazaki Folk Music: A Voice for the Future

My name is Isik Berfin, and I am a Zazaki singer from the Kurdish minority—one of the youngest voices continuing the tradition of our endangered ethnic folk music. At a time when the Zazaki language and culture are being silenced through systemic assimilation by hierarchical states, I have chosen to resist through music since the ages of 6- starting from World Music Festivals in San Francisco.

Zazaki is not just a language—it carries the soul of our people, our stories, and our history. My mission is to keep it alive by performing and archiving traditional songs that have been passed down for generations, many of which have never been recorded. I sing to preserve our identity, and to ensure the next generation hears the voices of their ancestors.

Until now, I have had no sponsors or financial support. I have never stepped into a studio. Every song I share, every video I post, is made entirely by me—on my phone, from my heart. Despite the limitations, I continue to sing because I believe our culture is worth saving.
