A friend of mine found the tiniest, sweetest 7-8 week old puppy all alone in the gutter of an elementary school—dirty, weak, and covered in fleas. His family couldn’t take her in, but I knew in my heart she was meant to be with me, especially after the loss I had suffered when I miscarried. At her first vet appointment, they guessed her birthdate was within days of when I lost my own baby girl. It felt like a miracle, and from that day forward, Isabella and I became the closest mommy and daughter team you’d ever see. We went everywhere together—even to our favorite sushi restaurant, where they made an exception for us to sit outside. Isabella loved meeting new people, especially kids, and everyone was amazed at how friendly and brave she was for a Chihuahua. I truly feel like the luckiest mom in the world to have such a loving, empathetic companion who always knows how to make me smile. There have been times when Isabella sensed I was in danger and made sure to protect me—she’s always been my little guardian angel. She’s survived so much, including a coyote attack at eight years old, and she’s brought so much joy to our family, especially to her grandma, grandpa, and auntie. Now, Isabella needs your help. She needs her kidneys flushed and heart medication for a heart murmur. Even though she’s lost her sight, she hasn’t let it slow her down, and I can’t let her down now when she needs us most.
