I’m Isaac! I like books and such and am also a trans guy looking to get top surgery this year—hopefully as soon as I can before this administration bans gender-affirming surgeries. I’m paying for it entirely out of pocket.

Let’s talk about what the situation is (and I’ll try not to sound like a Democrat on your phone texting you for money).

Usually, insurance companies cover top surgeries, at least a little bit. In order to even get a surgery date scheduled, the company can’t have any language in it excluding trans surgeries. The amount of health insurance companies that do that is astronomically small.

The insurance plan that I’m under (or was under), actually has specific language that explicitly prevents any healthcare provider from helping their clients get any kind of gender affirming care. Under this plan, I can’t even get a surgery date cleared (much less funded), even with recommendation letters from two therapists, a psychiatrist letter, and years of hormone therapy.

So to get this surgery done and to get a date even scheduled, I’ll need to find a different insurance or pay this entirely out of pocket. I can’t even get an exact quote on how much this is going to be because of this whole insurance debacle, but after doing some calculations, I’ve found it will likely cost an average of about 10K.

Once I have my surgery done, I’ll also need a week or two to recover, meaning I won’t be able to work my “lifting things above my head” job (something that you definitely can’t do a little after top surgery), so I’m also factoring that into the costs.

I’m not sure if things like this surgery will even be legal for much longer, but if it means going in debt for lifelong happiness, I will absolutely take that. Any help you bring ($5-20) will always be appreciated—that’s why I started this, so I’ll probably be only like 9K in debt instead of 10K haha!!
