This gofundme page has been set up to help assist Inuit fighting for the land, waters, animals, and ALL of our futures. Inuit in northern Baffin Island are dealing with an environmental crisis that will affect the entire world if not stopped. We know this with all of the conversations that have been happening over the years around Climate Change.
To date, the livelihoods and future of north Baffin Islanders have been directly and negatively impacted by a mine that extracts iron ore called Baffinland. Just in the past five years, Inuit of Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet) have noticed a great decline in fish, narwhal, seals, caribou, just to name a few. Animals are dying, the land is getting ruined, and the waters have been poisoned from the mining. Yet there are still talks of the mines phase 2 expansion.
If the proposed phase 2 expansion were to happen, there would be a 110 km railway that would be built right in the middle of the main migratory route, which of course would negatively impact the entire eco-system in that area. The expansion of the mine would also mean bringing in more traffic in the waters with ships filled with iron ore - this would affect ALL of the seas eco-system.
The Inuit elders have said no to the phase 2 expansion in fear of our very existence. Inuit elders posses knowledge, teachings, and research that has been accumulated for a millennia and passed down from generation to generation.
Currently, Inuit hunters are protesting at the iron ore mine to ensure our voices are heard (they travelled 2 days by snowmobile with limited resources from their communities, and with riffles in hope they will be able to harvest some food to eat). Elders are voicing their concerns for our future generations to come and for the very existence of Inuit (people). Inuit and people from all different walks of life are demanding the expansion come to a halt, and for the mine and all the Inuit orgs to be transparent and held accountable for what has happened thus far. To prevent a great tragedy that may occur if phase 2 expansion happens.
