This is a fundraiser to support our group, the Nuluujaat Land Guardians. We are a group of Inuit hunters and land defenders from Nunavut, Canada. The Guardians came together in 2021 to protect our Inuit territory (Nuluujaat) from the actions of the Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation.
Baffinland is threatening to harm the Arctic animals we Inuit depend upon and destroy the Inuit culture and way of life by pushing forward with a reckless plan to expand its existing iron mine in Nunavut.
The mine has been operating for several years now and we have observed serious impacts on the local environment and the animals we depend upon (https://vimeo.com/505376532).
Despite the harm being caused, greedy mining company Baffinland wants to expand the mine and double its output. This would mean more shipping traffic driving off narwhals and disturbing their calving grounds. It would mean a 100+km railway built across a caribou migration route. The impact assessment on the expansion project was just completed, and it found the expansion posed a serious risk to wildlife and Inuit and should not proceed. But Baffinland is trying to go ahead with its plans anyway.
In February 2021, our group the Nuluujaat Land Guardians blockaded the iron ore mine for one week to ensure the voices of Inuit hunters were heard, after travelling two days by snowmobile. The peaceful blockade sparked solidarity protests all across Nunavut.
We are now facing a $14 million lawsuit from Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation and a permanent injunction from the mining site. We see this as intimidation to make Inuit stop our protest and opposition to this dangerous project. But we will not be prevented from protecting our land and waters.
