Help Ini Finish Nursing School!

Hi everyone, glad you're here! My name is Molly and I'm a friend and classmate of Ini's. We are both about to start our final semester of nursing school (can you believe it?!) and are both overjoyed and terrified.

Let me start this off by talking about Ini as a person.
Ini is the person sitting in the back of the room; who never says anything but knows everything. She is an observer (I call her a lurker) and she prefers to stay in the background.
We always had our clinical rotation together, so over time we grew to know each other better.
After becoming much closer throughout the summer and into the fall, she became my co-cabinet member of the Student Nurses Association and a good friend. Here's what I learned about my "quiet" classmate:

  • She reads reviews on everything. I swear to you, one week she was staying at my house before clinical and decided to make pesto pasta. She LOOKED AT REVIEWS OF THE PESTO! Yes, the pesto you put in your pasta. There we were in the middle of Target, looking at reviews of good ol' Pesto brands. I'm pretty sure we only had 3 options, but she couldn't get passed the 3-star reviews. We had a good laugh and ordered some wings instead.
  • She prays every night before she sleeps. She thanks God and prays for a good tomorrow, hearing her pray is like hearing her heart speak.
  • She must sleep with the bedroom door locked or closed off in some way. My door doesn't have a lock, so jokingly I put the bed in front of the door. She was pleased with that, and I thought it was hilarious. But it sufficed!
  • SHE IS NOT SHY! At least, not once she gets familiar with you. She is HILARIOUS and she had me cracking up for hours in the emergency department. Literally. It hurt my collarbone to laugh but I couldn't help it! I wish I could thank her a million times over for that.
  • She is whole-heartedly kind and gentle. The night before we needed to be up at 5 am for the hospital, I thought I broke my collarbone. I told her to stay home so she could get some sleep, and that I would be ok going alone. She refused to let me go without her, and she stayed with me all night in the ED, never once asking to leave. She got 1 hour of sleep that night, and still worked an 8-hour hospital shift the next day.

As much as she hates when I mention this, Ini is #1 in our cohort. She is a diligent and incredibly hard-working student, and she receives the top grade 99.9% of the time. Although, I did ALMOST match her once! She actually reads the book, which should say a lot. She puts her absolute full effort into learning and growing, and I applaud her for it. Nursing school is not easy, but she sure makes it look like it.

Ini is an international student. She was born and raised in Nigeria and is here on a student visa. After graduation, she plans to stay here, get a nursing job, and become an American citizen. Unfortunately, because of this, she is also forced to pay almost $20,000 more than the rest of us. That means each semester, she pays around $5,000 when the average in-state tuition (after financial aid) comes to about nothing. Because she is on a student visa, her working options are limited. She is severely restricted in earning any income and does NOT qualify for ANY financial aid.
I have created this GoFundMe to help her pay off some of her balance of $8,000 before we graduate. I know this has been stressing her out, but she does a good job of hiding it. The resources she's reached out to for help with international students have told her there's nothing they can do.

While I don't expect to reach the goal, I am here to hopefully ease the strain a bit for Ini. She is so deserving and I wish you could all see what I see, but I didn't want to type too much.

The funds will all be put into a check that will be directly given to GCC to help pay off her balance. I will post the receipt after the end date to show my good faith.
We are hoping having any remaining balance after our 4th-semester finals will not impede her ability to earn her diploma and sit for the NCLEX, but I can update this GoFundMe when we find out!

If you've read this far, you're the coolest.
