My name is Indira Placide, and I am currently a rising second-year dental student who dreams of becoming a dentist. I firmly believe that healthcare is a fundamental right for everyone, and my goal is to serve underserved communities worldwide by providing optimal dental care, particularly to older individuals. After completing my bachelor's degree in Biology, I encountered significant challenges in securing the necessary funds to continue my education in dental school. Nevertheless, after five relentless years, I persevered in taking the Dental Admission Test and applying to various dental schools, leading to a pass in starting a life-changing dental career with a school in the District of Columbia.

If I were to never take another step forward in my dental career, I would forever be grateful for the accomplishments I have achieved thus far, thanks to my unwavering support. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all those who have supported me on this journey.

However, I now find myself in a difficult situation, as I face financial restrictions that prevent me from covering my tuition and fees. Despite my diligent efforts to gather funds since taking the Dental Admission Test in 2018, I have encountered numerous financial barriers. I earnestly desire to continue my education alongside the esteemed Class of 2026.

Presently, I have a balance due to expenses related to books and fees, which the tuition scholarship I received does not cover. As a result, I cannot proceed with the program, and my school accounts have been placed on hold, with transcripts blocked. This impediment has prevented me from continuing with the summer semester. With a humble heart, I am asking for any assistance that could help me overcome this financial hurdle and continue my education.

I have always faced financial disadvantages, as I was born into a single-parent household in Saint Lucia. Additionally, my family has consistently struggled to provide the much-needed financial support for my education, which comes with significant costs. My mother, who only completed elementary education, has faced challenges in finding employment.

Moreover, our financial situation worsened when my father became blind ten years ago. Despite the difficulties, I have never allowed financial strain to dampen my spirit. Instead, I have used my challenging circumstances as motivation to pursue my educational and professional dreams.

As an international student, my primary obstacle to accessing higher education is the lack of financial aid options available to me. Scholarships, grants, and loans, which often provide crucial support to domestic students, are typically unavailable to international students like myself. Consequently, seeking financial assistance is vital to overcome the financial barriers that impede my educational pursuits.

Poverty often acts as a barrier that hinders individuals from achieving their goals. However, I firmly believe education and resilience are powerful defenses against this vicious cycle. As Sir Arthur Lewis once stated, "There is no vicious circle of poverty for men of determination." My service-driven nature and the deep desire to succeed have propelled me towards a career field less explored by those facing financial hardships.
