Fundraiser for Equipment for ALS Patient Anita Murphy

Anita was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in July of 2023. ALS is a terminal illness that is characterized by progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. ALS affects voluntary control of arms and legs, and leads to trouble breathing and swallowing. ALS does not affect the mind of the patient.

Our dear family member and friend, Anita has been very proactive about managing this disease but her journey has not been easy. The ALS Society is not government funded and has been working with the Ontario Assisted Device Program to supply some of the equipment that is essential for the management of this debilitating disease. Sometimes this process takes months before it is complete and the amount allowed is based on the income of the afflicted person.

An adjustable hospital bed for Anita’s needs will cost between $7,000-$10,000. This bed needs to be wider than a standard 36” hospital bed in order for the ALS patient to be able to turn over on her own. It would improve the quality of Anita’s life immensely.

Anita is able to receive Alert bracelets, wheelchair cushions, etc. for one month free but then monthly charges start. There is no continuous financial support for her equipment other than donations which do not meet the physical needs of the patient.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated and contribute to the finances needed to purchase items for her care. Anita is very grateful for all of the kindness and support she has received and continues to receive from her friends and family.
