Iliana Monteagudo-Surfside Condo Collapse Survivor
Hi, my name is Andy Alvarez, my mother lived in unit 611, a building she had recently moved into December of last year. She was sleeping in the early hours of June 24th when sounds coming from her living room woke her. When she went to see if she maybe hadn't closed the balcony sliding door, she began seeing a crack form her ceiling 2" thick begin forming down the wall. She quickly put some clothes on and grabbed her purse and medications, closed her apartment door and ran towards the elevator thinking thats where the emergency stairwell was, not knowing there was another emergency stairwell just a few feet away from her door. When she was about 2 flights down, the power in the building was out and she was completely in the dark, the building collapsed, including her apartment and the stairs she should of gotten.
She barely got out alive, she now only has the clothes she was wearing, her purse and sandals. She lost everything. in her 64 years of age, she must begin from scratch.
We are heartbroken for all the families affected, and we will never lose hope. Any help will contribute to my mother getting some sort of normacy back. Thank you for your help.

Hola, mi nombre es Andy Alvarez, mi madre vivía en la unidad 611, un edificio al que se había mudado recientemente en diciembre del año pasado. Estaba durmiendo en las primeras horas del 24 de junio cuando los sonidos provenientes de su sala de estar la despertaron. Cuando fue a ver si tal vez no había cerrado la puerta corrediza del balcón, comenzó a ver una grieta del techo de 2 "de espesor que comenzaba a formarse en la pared. Rápidamente se puso algo de ropa y agarró su bolso y sus medicamentos, cerró la puerta de su apartamento y corrió hacia el ascensor pensando que allí estaba la escalera de emergencia, sin saber que había otra escalera de emergencia a solo unos metros de su puerta. Cuando estaba a unos 2 pisos más abajo, la electricidad en el edificio se había cortado y estaba completamente en la oscuridad, el edificio se derrumbó, incluido su apartamento, y las escaleras que debería haber bajado.
Apenas salió con vida, ahora solo tiene la ropa que vestía, su bolso y sandalias. Ella perdió todo. a sus 64 años, debe empezar de cero.
