More than half of the reporters at the Idaho Statesman woke up Thursday to find they were the victims of mass layoffs by McClatchy, our hedge-fund-backed owner.
In less than a month, 10 of our reporters — who cover breaking news, suburbs, state politics, government accountability, growth and development, education, sports and opinion — will lose their jobs.
We worked at the Idaho Statesman because we believe local journalism matters. We were there to hold Boise’s schools, county officials, commercial developers and legislators accountable. In most cases, no one will be left to cover these eliminated news beats.
McClatchy paid many of us less than a living wage. As a result, a lot of us don’t have large savings to sustain us as we look for new positions.
It’s been a privilege to serve Idaho by bringing vital information to our communities. We are grateful for any amount you can give to help reporters get back on their feet. All proceeds will go directly to those of us who have lost jobs.
Thank you!
