Help Ian Mosher Cope with ALS
The goal of this campaign is to raise funds to help purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle that will allow the Mosher family to get Ian to required appointments and treatment centers as his ALS progresses and his condition worsens. (~$90,000)
All donated funds will be matched by the Dykhuizen Foundation - up to $25,000 in each of the 2021 and 2022 calendar years.
Mosher was first diagnosed in October 2020 with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) and it was confirmed in February 2021.
“On two different occasions, I've sat on a bed and been told I have an incurable disease,” Mosher said, speaking openly about his condition.
At first, he said, it was “shocking, terrifying, emotionally exhausting” but the second time it was about moving forward and dealing with the diagnosis.
“I have had amazing opportunities — not only in baseball, but in life — and they continue to (grow) every day and I don't take one of them for granted,” he said. “I feel extraordinarily fortunate that I have been, for whatever reason, chosen to have this illness and be alive this long and will continue every day that I have to seek out and find new enjoyable experiences.”
Mosher looks around the fields in Kentville, Nova Scotia, and often sees his former teammates and players giving back and sharing the lessons they learned during their careers.
“My greatest source of pride at this stage in my career is not my accomplishment ... it's the fact that so many of my former players are coaching,” he said. “That is the most special thing for me.”
Through his lifetime involvement with youth athletics and his career as a public servant in the Nova Scotia Department of Justice and Correctional Services - Nova Scotia Youth Center, Ian would be honored to have your support in this campaign.
