Our lifelong friend Iain is fighting the battle of his life and he needs our collective help to survive the catastrophic medical emergency and make it home to his partner and two young children in Europe.
Iain (38), a kind, hardworking father of two, who has always been there for others, was in the middle of a massive life transition, closing up his life in Africa to relocate his family back to Europe to start a new chapter. To make the transition easier on their two young children, his partner flew ahead with them to stay with her parents while Iain stayed behind to finish packing up their life in Malawi. During this time, on 13th June 2026, Iain suffered a sudden, massive heart attack. His mother flew over from the UK, and due to the limited facilities in Malawi, managed to transfer him to Johannesburg.
The Medical Crisis
Iain underwent a life-saving triple bypass surgery that extended from the planned 8 hours to taking 15 hours, due to severe complications with his lungs that meant he had to be placed into an induced coma and supported by two separate life-support systems: a standard ventilator and an advanced ECMO (heart-lung) machine.
Thankfully, the surgery itself was a success and Iain has come off the ECMO machine. He is now being weaned off the ventilator and sedation in the ICU, as he slowly begins to wake up and respond to his mum's voice. However, his journey is far from over.
The Road Ahead in Johannesburg
Iain’s recovery will require ongoing intensive medical care, rehabilitation, and a prolonged stay in South Africa. Once he wakes up fully, he must remain in Johannesburg to undergo weeks of vital cardiorespiratory physiotherapy to help his lungs fully heal and rebuild his physical strength before he can ever be deemed well enough to undergo another flight, let alone a long-distance flight.
The Financial Reality
Alongside the emotional strain, Iain and his family are facing immense financial pressure. Healthcare networks in South Africa require heavy upfront cash deposits and regular intermediate payments.
The surgery, days on multiple life-support machines, specialist surgeon fees, continuous 24/7 cardiac ICU care, and the upcoming rehabilitation facility fees carry astronomical out-of-pocket costs. We do not want Iain to wake up from this trauma to face a life-altering financial nightmare.
How You Can Help
Iain has always been there for others, now it's our turn to be there for him and his family. With their blessing, we've created this fundraiser to help ease some of that burden so they can focus on what truly matters; his recovery.
Most importantly, we're trying to give Iain every chance of making it home to the two young children who are waiting for their dad.
Please Note on Our Goal:
Because we do not yet know the full, final extent of the medical and rehabilitation costs, we have put in a placeholder fundraising target and will adjust this figure transparently as the hospital updates the family.
All funds raised will go directly towards covering:
- Iain’s ongoing private hospital, ICU, and multi-specialist medical expenses.
- The essential daily physiotherapy and step-down rehabilitation required.
- Accommodation, travel, and transport for his family while they remain by his side abroad.
- The eventual safe transit required to finally bring him home.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, will make a genuine difference. We’re raising this in British Pounds (£) as our currency converts strongly into South African Rand, giving us immense power to help pay down these bills in real-time.
If you’re unable to donate, simply sharing this page with others is another way you can help.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support. ♥♡♥
Let's help give Iain one less thing to worry about as he fights his way back to health.
