Humberto Castillo is a kind, funny, and sensitive man who lights up every room with his jokes and warm spirit. He is the only brother to four devoted sisters, and his love for family is at the heart of everything he does. Humberto has always been a family man, and his greatest fear is being left alone or leaving his loved ones behind. Humberto lives with his mother and has been the sole breadwinner for their household. His inability to work is a significant financial loss for both him and his mother, and it has created a heavy burden for the family. He is currently in the process of applying for SSDI, but those benefits are not yet available.
Recently, Humberto faced a devastating diagnosis: his liver is no longer functioning, and he was placed in hospice care with little hope for recovery. The hospital told us to prepare for his passing, and he said his goodbyes to family and friends, believing he had only days left. But our family refused to give up. We sought a second opinion, and miraculously, Humberto began to show signs of improvement. Now, he has a chance to fight for his life and become healthy enough to receive a liver transplant. In addition to his liver condition, Humberto is also experiencing kidney failure and is undergoing dialysis three times a week, which has added to the complexity and urgency of his care.
While his medications are still covered by insurance, the costs for other essential treatments are overwhelming. Insurance will not cover the outpatient alcoholic rehabilitation center, which is a critical part of his recovery plan. In addition, insurance is not covering the physical therapy he needs to regain mobility—right now, Humberto is unable to walk and requires intensive therapy to work toward independence. He also has to pay for in-home nursing aids, as he is no longer staying at the hospital. Our family is struggling to keep up with these expenses. Humberto’s sisters have taken time off work and uprooted their lives to be by his side, ensuring he is never alone in his hospital room. His two daughters and grandchild, who live in Chihuahua, Mexico, cannot be with him, making the support of his sisters and extended family even more important.
We have all come together to give Humberto the best chance at survival, but now we need help. Financial support would allow us to focus on his recovery and health, rather than worrying about how to pay for the care that could save his life. Your generosity will help cover the cost of the outpatient rehabilitation center, physical therapy, in-home nursing aids, and other essential treatments, giving Humberto hope for a future with his family.
