One Man. Hundreds of Dogs. A Shelter Worth Saving
My name is Maddy, fundraising from the UK for Houssein Hamze and his hundreds of dogs at Mashala Shelter in Lebanon.
Lebanon is entering its 6th year of one of the most severe economic crises in modern history. Resources, infrastructure and organisations are stretched thin. On top of that, recent military escalations have created a surge in stray animals who are in desperate need of care and support. Dogs and cats have migrated in search of safety, food and shelter.
Many of them were lucky enough to find Houssein.
Houssein is a quiet hero. He remained at the shelter throughout the war and times of upheaval, taking responsibility for hundreds of pets and strays who were left behind during periods of mass displacement. On the 6th of October, 2024, his own home was damaged by an airstrike, and so was the van he bought to transport animals, food and supplies. Many of the cats and dogs he had rescued fled in fear, leaving him heartbroken, but they have gradually returned over time.
Many arrived suffering from trauma and nervousness around people. Some even require amputations due to injuries they have sustained in the unstable environment. At Mashala Shelter they are provided with a safe haven, where they can unlearn fear in a place where they are loved and fed, surrounded by other dogs.
Houssein also welcomes adoptions and encourages visitors to come and see the dogs for themselves, hoping to open people's eyes and hearts to the stray dogs of Lebanon.
The situation in Lebanon remains uncertain, but you can help to ensure that Houssein can continue his mission!
