Please help purchase fencing for Hope, the blind horse. An extremely generous donor has offered to match all donations up to $3K!
Just days before Christmas, Hope, pictured here, was abandoned in the high desert of Southern California, tied to a utility pole with baling twine. She was blind—both eyes were severely infected and had progressed into very painful secondary glaucoma. Despite being terrified, this sweet mare stood there, all alone, in the middle of nowhere, waiting patiently for help. Her hooves had years of overgrowth, making it difficult for her to walk. She had clearly suffered from years of neglect and worse, and also showed signs of osteoarthritis and DSLD.
Thanks to the good Samaritan who found her while off-roading in the desert, local rescues who stepped up to help, and animal control, Hope was placed in a foster home where she received the veterinary and farrier care she needed. Since then, Hope has become a permanent resident at Blue Roan Ranch Sanctuary, where she is described as the sweetest mare they have ever met.
In addition to her blindness, Hope suffers from Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis (DSLD) and osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, there is no cure for DSLD or osteoarthritis. Treatment is focused on pain management and supportive care. As part of her treatment plan, Hope would benefit from a safe area to be turned out in the company of other horses. In addition to increasing mobility and comfort, turnout time with friends results in improved digestion, decreased stress, and a much happier horse. The sanctuary currently has one very large, irregularly shaped turnout, which is overwhelming for sweet Hope, so her daily exercise outside her stall and paddock is limited to hand walking. Fence panels would allow the sanctuary to create an additional area so that Hope (and other horses with special needs) would have the freedom to move around in a much larger area while also being able to safely socialize with the other sanctuary horses.
We are asking for your help to make this a reality. Will you help us help Hope?
