Hi, my name is Jameela
I am campaigning to secure and install an official Westminster Green Plaque at Caxton Hall to finally honour the suffragists who used Caxton Hall in London as a base for meetings to help secure the fundamental democratic rights we hold and cherish today.
To bring this historic tribute to life and cover the necessary installation and administrative costs, I need to raise £4,000 including VAT (GoFundMe's initial goal is £1.5K).
Official Recognition: Westminster’s Green Plaque scheme (launched in 1991) commemorates buildings of profound historical interest where events of great significance took place.
The Criteria Met: Caxton Hall is deeply tied to the heritage of the city, having hosted historic political movements that fundamentally improved society and shaped modern democracy.
While the building proudly displays a plaque commemorating Sir Winston Churchill for the speeches he gave there between 1937 and 1942, it leaves out the hundreds of women who turned these exact same steps into the beating heart of the women’s suffrage movement.
From 1907, Caxton Hall served as a vital home for meetings by the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS). It was a staging ground where courageous campaigners gathered, strategised, and organized in the fierce, relentless struggle for equality and voting rights.
Notably, it was from this building that women set out on historic marches to Parliament—most notoriously on November 18, 1910 (an event widely known as "Black Friday"), where protesters faced brutal physical violence and hostility from police and bystanders. Caxton Hall even served as a crucial triage point and refuge for the injured women returning from the clashes.
Let's finally honour these women who sacrificed so much and stood firm against injustice to change the course of history so we can live with the equal democratic and political rights we have today.
Where Your Money Goes
Every pound raised will go directly toward the creation, approval process, and formal installation of the green plaque. By contributing, you are helping to permanently correct the historical record and ensure these trailblazing women receive the public recognition they have long been denied.
