Dear family and friends,
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved father, husband, and friend, Willie Smith, who left this world peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by love in his final moments.
Born on January 2, 1951, in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, Willie moved to California as a teenager, where he built a life full of purpose and service. A master shoe cobbler—an artist with his hands—Willie served his community for decades, operating repair shops in San Jose, Cupertino, and at the Fort Ord Army Base. He later continued his craft in Hayward and San Lorenzo, where he worked at his beloved "Shoe Stop" until April 2024.
But Willie was so much more than his work. He was an outdoorsman at heart, with a deep love for fishing, archery (even competing nationally), classic cars, and the music of legends like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. He was a man of many talents and even more heart. To know him was to love him.
Willie is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Joy A. Smith, affectionately known as “Mama Joy.” Their love for each other was like no other—far beyond anything one could ever imagine, transcending this Earth and reaching into eternity. Their bond was something truly special, a love that others only dream about. It was a love built on unwavering devotion and partnership. Their favorite song was “Thank God for Giving Me You,” a perfect reflection of the beautiful connection they shared.
Willie is also survived by his two children, Joy “Missy” Smith and Matthew Lewis Smith, along with their spouses, Andre Cox and Jade Smith. Joy is a dedicated medical professional who has spent many years in healthcare, gifted with a rare compassion and calling for helping and healing others. Matthew proudly serves in the U.S. Army’s air defense, protecting our country and supporting those in need. Together, Joy and Matthew carry on his legacy—a reflection of the love, strength, and values Willie instilled in them. His greatest pride, however, was his grandchildren, Aaliyah and Journee Smith, who brought him endless joy and laughter.
Funds raised will go toward giving Willie the memorial he deserves and supporting Mama Joy as she navigates life without him—covering moving costs, bills, and other essential needs.
If you're unable to donate, we kindly ask that you share this and keep Willie and our family in your thoughts and prayers.
With love and gratitude,
The Smith Family ❤️️
