Dear Friends and Family Members,

We are writing to you today to let you know about the loss of our dad, Tuy Nguyen, otherwise known as “Daddy” or “Ba” in our household. Tuy passed away the morning of June 15, 2021, surrounded by his loved ones. He was five days away from celebrating his 71st birthday in the United States, or his 74th birthday in Vietnam. His real age is unknown to most, a consequence of relocating to the U.S. as a refugee from the Vietnam war.

Tuy was an honorable man, a dedicated soldier, a committed husband, grandparent, and a loving father to eight children. In 1969, he spent a year in college before being drafted into the Navy. At the age of 24, he spent 2 years training as an officer before being selected as a 2nd Lieutenant. He worked for South Vietnam and the U.S. for 2 years, providing safety to the general, overseeing their “special forces,” and assisting with the management of 2,000 crew members. He was stationed at a U.S. base in DaNang, VN before he was offered passage to the U.S. He chose to separate from his family of 13 to provide a better opportunity for his future children.

From 1975 - 1982, he spent time in Pennsylvania, New York, and Texas before settling down in Sioux City, IA and meeting our mother. As the sole provider of our family, he worked tirelessly at the local meat packing plant, often coming home with aching hands, back, and sore feet. His determination to provide for his growing family enabled him to overcome the harsh working conditions. Even after long 10-12 hour shifts at the plant, he would still act as our personal handyman, fixing broken pipes, windows, and roofing in our deteriorating mobile home. He retired at the age of 68 in 2015 after suffering from congestive heart failure in 2014.

Four years later, in 2019, our dad was unable to upkeep the aging mobile home. They lost their home and all of the memories that came with it. What our dad had worked so hard to preserve was demolished. With the help of our small family and close friends, we were able to find them housing.

On June 1st, 2021, he was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. For his last two weeks of life, we focused on transporting him from Western Iowa to Eastern Iowa to fulfill his wish of being surrounded by his family. With navigating housing, covering the mounting medical costs, and transportation, our family could not afford to give our dad the funeral that he deserves.

For a man that sacrificed so much for his family, and wished to give his children a better life than his own, any assistance covering his memorial service and additional support would be appreciated.

Thank you,

The Nguyen Family
