Maria Vega Lugo was a 71-year-old mother of three, grandmother of fourteen, and great-grandmother of five. She devoted her life to her family, raising her children on her own after losing her husband to cancer when her youngest was just 17 years old. From that moment on, she became not only the heart of her home, but a mother to her community. Maria opened her doors to anyone in need—offering warm meals, a place to rest, and the kind of unconditional care that made people feel seen and valued. She never judged, never turned anyone away, and gave love freely to those who crossed her path. Her kindness, dedication, and tireless work ethic left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

In recent years, Maria faced severe and ongoing health challenges. She bravely fought for more time with her family while battling heart failure that required multiple stents, kidney failure that led to dialysis, and serious infections that resulted in amputations—all while striving to maintain her independence and spirit. On the morning of January 7, 2026, surrounded by her entire family in the ICU, Maria passed away after complications following her second leg amputation. After several resuscitation attempts, her heart gave out, and her loved ones were forced to say goodbye to a woman who meant everything to them.
