Dr. Tracy Tolbert, a beloved professor in the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice & Emergency Management at California State University, Long Beach, passed away unexpectedly around March 4. Tracy was known for her authenticity and clarity—she spoke directly, held high standards, and cared deeply about her students. She brought honesty, laughter, and compassion into the classroom, and many students knew they could count on her to tell the truth and stand beside them.
Her work focused on crime, inequality, and the barriers women face in reporting sexual violence. Tracy earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Southern California and devoted her career to teaching, mentoring, and advocating for those whose voices are too often unheard.
Because Tracy left no financial resources for final arrangements, colleagues are organizing a respectful cremation and memorial. Carol and Dianna are personally covering these costs, and this fundraiser will reimburse those expenses so Tracy can be laid to rest with dignity.
Our goal is $5,000 to cover cremation, an urn, and a small memorial gathering for colleagues, students, and friends. Colleagues are also exploring the establishment of a scholarship in Tracy’s name, with details to be shared once available. If donations exceed memorial expenses, remaining funds will support that effort, pending university approval.
