For over 20 years, my dearest friend Dejenaba has been the nurturing shoulder that many of us have leaned on in times of need. Now, it’s our turn to be there for her. She and her brothers, Ogbonna, Nnamdi, Kokayi and Ms. Dianne have lost
their beloved father and partner O'banion Gordon. A man who was - a pillar of strength, creativity, and leadership in our community.
O'banion was known for his beautiful African wood artwork, crafted with care and passion at his studio, Woodcrafts by O'banion. He was a community leader, deeply committed to the freedom and empowerment of African people, using his art and voice to inspire and uplift others.
As a pioneer in Camden, NJ, O'banion led the first public Kwanzaa event at Rutgers University, a tradition he faithfully continued in community spaces for over 40 years. His legacy of cultural pride and community organizing will be felt for generations to come.
Now, in this difficult time, we are coming together as community to help his family cover the costs of his funeral and honor his memory in the way he deserves. Any amount that you can contribute will be deeply appreciated and will help to ease the burden on a family that has given so much to others.
Thank you for your generosity, love, and support. You can also give your contributions directly to O'banion's daughter Dejenaba N. Gordon through Venmo:@dejenaba3
