My name is Lili and I am very grateful for you taking the time to read my father’s story Jose Luis or better known as Abu Jose (Grandpa Jose).

I had a very hard time resorting to this community as I am not one that posts a lot of my private life and I tend to shy away from vulnerability. But after supporting my father’s cancer journey over the past +2 years and after sleepless nights over the past 3 months and the emotional toll, I have come to realize I need to reach out for help…

Meet Abu Jose

My father was a loving spouse, parent, brother, dedicated grandpa and friend to many. His kindness and generosity touched countless lives. His bubbly personality, humor and love for music and dancing filled up every room he entered with light and happiness. My father’s laugh was infectious and his permanent smile a beautiful example of his attitude towards life. His favorite title – Abu Jose (Grandpa Jose), his greatest joy in life was being an amazing grandfather to 6 grandchildren (5 boys and 1 girl).

Abu Jose’s Cancer Diagnosis (August 2023)

We were shocked to learn that my father was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins follicular lymphoma on August 2023. After feeling an increasing pain on his left leg, a PET scan done on September 2023 found cancer had spread to his bone marrow. After feeling itchiness in his skin following his first 2 rounds of chemo, this was thought to be only a side effect. However, in a visit to his dermatologist after exposure to poison ivy while being taken on a walk to the park, his biopsy returned with melanoma – skin cancer. We were not ready to give up and my father always had the attitude of a thriver. We pushed through all of these ups and downs and pushed through the remaining 4 rounds of chemo/immunotherapy.

We finally made it to the first milestone, the completion of his 6 cycles of treatment in March 2024. When receiving the results of his control PET scan, our eyes filled with heavy tears of joy, there was no activity present, no more PET scan lighting up like a Christmas tree. This happiness was short lived, as 6 months later, on September 2024, non-Hodgkins follicular lymphoma turned from a passive into an aggressive form of cancer, with lymph nodes all over his body, double the size of the original diagnosis.

That same month, we pulled together our strength, picked ourselves back up and started with the second line treatment, a medication called lenalidomide combined with obinutuzumab. This turned out to be a very tricky schedule to follow and a very toxic treatment for Dad. In the first month of treatment, Dad became bed bound. His immune system became compromised and we started a downward spiral. Between many waiting times, additional meds like nivestim to help improve blood counts, Dad got worse over time. He averaged one hospitalization every month and a half.

Abu Jose’s 70th Birthday

The last hospitalization happened right after his 70th birthday, on June 23, 2025. Dad collapsed and got rushed to UCI Medical Center. We were devasted to learn after multiple painful bone marrow biopsies, that Dad had a disease called Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a life-threatening syndrome of overwhelming inflammation that causes multiorgan failure and death. The culprit of this HLH was found to be a virus called Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) that establishes a permanent infection and is linked to many malignant disease like cancer and autoimmune disease.

We are thankful for the tumor board and all of the specialists at UCI Medical Center, for taking such good care of Dad, for collaborating as one expert team to provide the best treatment options to help Dad fight his cancer, HLH, EBV and every other curve ball thrown at him from never ending infections to organ failure and for their strength for not taking “no” from the FDA for compassionate use cancer medications (nivolumab). Our hearts shattered seeing Dad experience so much pain and suffering while his will to live slowly diminished and on September 4, 2025 Dad lost his battle to cancer.

Why We’re Asking for Help:

The weight of the medical bills from +70 days at UCI Medical Center, the majority of the time in ICU and the expensive multiple medications including the additional oxygen support, dialysis among other requirements, make it impossible for us to be able to cover the medical bills + Dad’s funeral costs.

This is by far not a journey we ever imagined walking, but it is one we cannot do alone.

Me llamo Lili y les agradezco mucho que se hayan tomado el tiempo de leer la historia de mi padre, José Luis, o mejor conocido como Abu José (Abuelo José).

Me costó mucho recurrir a esta comunidad, ya que no suelo publicar mucho sobre mi vida privada y tiendo a evitar la vulnerabilidad. Pero después de apoyar a mi padre en su lucha contra el cáncer durante los últimos dos años y tras las noches sin dormir en los últimos tres meses y el desgaste emocional, me he dado cuenta de que necesito buscar la ayuda de ustedes…

Les presento a Abu José

Mi padre fue un esposo, padre, hermano, abuelo dedicado y amigo leal para muchos. Su amabilidad y generosidad marcaron la vida de innumerables personas. Su personalidad alegre, su humor y su amor por la música y el baile llenaban de luz y felicidad cada lugar que visitaba. Su risa era contagiosa y su sonrisa permanente, un hermoso ejemplo de su actitud ante la vida. Su título favorito: Abu José (Abuelo José), su mayor alegría en la vida fue ser un abuelo increíble para 6 nietos (5 niños y 1 niña).

El Diagnóstico de cáncer de Abu Jose (agosto de 2023)

Nos sorprendió saber que a mi padre le diagnosticaron linfoma folicular no Hodgkin en agosto de 2023. Tras sentir un dolor cada vez mayor en la pierna izquierda, una tomografía realizada en septiembre de 2023 reveló que el cáncer se había extendido a la médula ósea. Tras sentir picazón en la piel después de las dos primeras rondas de quimioterapia, se pensó que se trataba de solo un efecto secundario. Sin embargo, en una visita a su dermatólogo, la biopsia reveló un melanoma (cáncer de piel). No estábamos dispuestos a rendirnos y mi padre siempre tuvo la actitud de un guerrero. Superamos todos estos altibajos y completamos las cuatro rondas restantes de quimioterapia/inmunoterapia.

Finalmente alcanzamos pasar la primera prueba: completar sus 6 ciclos de tratamiento en marzo de 2024. Al recibir los resultados de su tomografía de control, se nos llenaron los ojos de lágrimas de alegría. No había actividad, la tomografía ya no brillaba como un árbol de Navidad. Esta felicidad duró poco, ya que 6 meses después, en septiembre de 2024, el linfoma folicular no Hodgkin pasó de ser un cáncer pasivo a uno agresivo, con ganglios linfáticos en todo el cuerpo, el doble del tamaño del diagnóstico original.

Ese mismo mes, con nerviosismo comenzamos con el tratamiento de segunda línea, un medicamento llamado lenalidomida combinado con obinutuzumab. Resultó ser un programa muy difícil de seguir y un tratamiento muy tóxico para papá. Durante el primer mes de tratamiento, papá quedó postrado en cama. Su sistema inmunitario se debilitó y comenzamos una espiral descendente. Entre las largas esperas y los medicamentos adicionales como nivestim para mejorar los recuentos sanguíneos, papá empeoró con el tiempo. Recibía un promedio de una hospitalización cada mes y medio.

El cumpleaños #70 de Abu Jose

Su última hospitalización ocurrió justo después de su cumpleaños #70, el 23 de junio de 2025. Papá callo y fue trasladado de urgencia al Centro Médico UCI. Nos destrozó saber, tras múltiples y dolorosas biopsias de médula ósea, que padecía una enfermedad llamada linfohistiocitosis hemofagocítica (LHH), un síndrome de inflamación intensa que causa insuficiencia en los órganos y la muerte. Se descubrió que el culpable de esta LHH era un virus llamado virus de Epstein-Barr (VEB), que establece una infección permanente y está vinculado a muchas enfermedades malignas, como el cáncer y las enfermedades autoinmunes.

Agradecemos al comité de tumores y a todos los especialistas del Centro Médico UCI por la excelente atención que le brindaron a papá, por colaborar como un equipo unido de expertos para brindarle las mejores opciones de tratamiento y ayudarlo a combatir su cáncer, la LHH, el VEB y todas las dificultades que se le presentaron, desde infecciones interminables hasta insuficiencia de órganos vitales , y por su fortaleza ante a la FDA para exigir los medicamentos oncológicos de uso compasivo (nivolumab). Nuestro corazón se rompía cada vez más al ver a papá experimentar tanto dolor y sufrimiento mientras sus ganas de vivir se desvanecían lentamente, y el 4 de septiembre de 2025 perdió la batalla contra el cáncer.

Por qué solicitamos ayuda:

El peso de las facturas médicas de más de 70 días en el Centro Médico UCI, la mayor parte del tiempo en cuidados intensivos y los costosos múltiples medicamentos, incluyendo el soporte de oxígeno adicional, la diálisis, entre otros requisitos, nos impiden cubrir las facturas médicas y los gastos funerarios de papá.

Este es un camino que jamás imaginamos recorrer, pero es uno que no podemos recorrer solos.
