Our family has had a whirlwind of a week with our sweet dog Honeybunch.
On Tuesday, December 16th, Honey started limping, and we immediately brought her to the vet. She was prescribed painkillers and strict crate rest, but her condition quickly worsened, leading to significant loss of mobility in her hind legs. After a trip to the emergency vet, we were referred to a specialist. On Saturday, December 21, Honey underwent an MRI and was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), a spinal condition affecting the discs between the vertebrae in a dog's spine. After consulting with three vets, we made the difficult decision to pursue surgery to address the immediate issue.
If you know us, you know we would never put a dog through treatment if it would negatively impact their life, and we would never prolong the life of our beloved pet for our own benefit. We said goodbye to our best buddy, Dewey, only a year ago, so we understand how hard these decisions can be. But Honey's story is different. Our sweet rescue, who has blossomed with us, needed this surgery to have a chance at a happy, pain-free life.
As I write this, Honey is in surgery and will be staying with the specialist for the next few days. Honey is such a special dog. When we first fostered her, she was completely shut down and broken, but she became a foster fail once we realized what a special girl she is. Over the last 4.5 years, we've watched her grow into a happy, loving companion. She is a duck-loving, pillow-snuggling, cheese monster who wants nothing more than to snuggle and play with her toys.
We are more than happy to rehab her and help her through this recovery process, but we humbly wanted to ask our friends, family, and community if they're interested in helping with this financially, as it is a much bigger burden than we anticipated. We recognize the decision is not one every dog owner would make. If Honey's prognosis were different, we wouldn't have pursued surgery, but we entered this hoping it could make a difference in her quality of life. Financially, this is a hard hit for us. We know it takes a community to help support, and people often ask how they can help. Right now, we need some help to remove this additional financial burden. Our ultimate fundraising goal is $10,000, which would greatly relieve some financial pressures for us, but know we are so grateful for any help you can provide. Honey deserves a lifetime of happiness and comfort.
Thank you,
Justin, Sarah, Pippa and Honey <3
