Kara is raising funds for Honey, her beloved grandma, to help keep Honey safe and comfortable in assisted living while they wait for the benefits she has earned. In the last year, Honey was diagnosed first with dementia and then Alzheimer’s. Before she had to leave Florida, she began having seizures and suffered a stroke, making it clear that she needed to be closer to family. In August 2025, Honey moved to Seattle to be near Kara, where they found an affordable assisted-living community that still allows Honey to live as independently as possible. There, Honey has access to nutritious meals, weekly housekeeping, activities, transportation, and a caring environment that supports both her health and quality of life.

This move has brought Honey stability, but it has also come with overwhelming costs. Kara has already put more than $40,000 toward Honey’s care over the past year, using personal savings and credit to make sure her grandma had what she needed. Kara has also been working overtime as a social worker just to have to borrow less money each month while trying to keep up with Honey’s care. At the same time, Honey’s VA Aid and Attendance claim, connected to her late husband’s Vietnam-era service, is still pending, and they are now also applying for Medicaid. The sale of Honey’s Florida home did not bring the financial relief they had hoped for because of the foreclosure crisis. Donations will go directly toward Honey’s assisted-living rent, medication management, and medication copays until her benefits are approved. Any support for Honey during this time would mean so much to Kara and their family.
