Help Norely Help Honduras

Donation protected
Norely Flores has a dream of a better Honduras; a place where her family can live safely and productively. Having spent her first ten years living in poverty in one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Tegucigalpa, she had to learn to be resilient at a young age.   Norely has always taken on the role of head of family to her seven, younger brothers as well as other children.  She provided them love, direction and an amazing role model.

Pat and I first met Norely when we traveled to Honduras six years ago. Since then we  have traveled to Honduras seven times to do service work at the Nuevo Paraiso Children's Project where we have met many amazing people.  We have provided financial support for 4 of Norely's brothers though Sister Rosa's project (SAN) that feeds, clothes, provides shelter, medical attention, and educates roughly 150 children rescued from the streets of Honduras.

Still, we asked how we could do something more long lasting.  How could we help Hondurans to improve their own country?  The plan that SAN and Norely helped us develop was to bring her to the US, help her get a college education, and then let her return to Honduras to help others with the knowledge and leadership skills she has gained.   She will also set a positive example of what can be achieved through hard work and determination.  John Carroll University generously agreed to provide 4 years of education tuition free once she achieves the required level of English proficiency.  Pat and I agreed to provide food, shelter, transportation, help with language classes, and other support while she does that.

Thus, Norely has been here since January of this year studying at the English Language Institute at the University of Akron.  She works very hard and frequently gets the highest grades in her class.  But, the process is taking longer than was first expected.  Not only does she have to master conversational English, she must also be able to read and write at the postsecondary educational level.  So, where we had hoped that she could start at John Carroll this fall, we now undersatnd that it will take an extra year.

That is the reason for this GoFundMe request.  We are asking for donations to help pay for her fall and spring tuition (which includes medical insurance) at the University of Akron.  The cost is $4850 per semester.

Some who are receiving this request have met Norely and seen what a personable, strong woman she is.  Others may have also traveled to  Nuevo Paraiso and seen the need there.  Still others may be watching the news about immigration issues and asking what can be done.    When we visited the ambassador to Honduras two years ago, he said the best thing we can do to stop the immigration problem is help these countries to become places people do not have to flee.

This funding request is one way you can make a difference in not only the life of Norely, but the lives of many others.  We appreciate that you have taken the time to read it.  Please let us know if you have any questions.  And, know that any amount that you can justify will be greatly appreciated and properly utilized.
