Hello, my name is Maryam. I am a 20-year refugee from Afghanistan who lives alone on the streets of Athens with my two children, Angela and Masha, who are 1 and 2 years old. For the last three months we have been sleeping in a park. Because I don’t have any papers and documents, the Greek state cannot provide us a house and money. The life on the street is very difficult, and I fear for the life of me and my children. A few days ago, I meet some volunteers from Europe who told me that maybe they can help me fundraise money. Currently I don’t have any money to buy food, clothes, milk nor medicine for my child who is sick. My two-year old child has a hole in the heart that needs to be treated with medicine. I hope that with your help I can provide my children with their basic needs until I have papers and can receive help from the Greek state. I hope that you will read my story and support me to create a good life for my children. My biggest dream is to see my two girls grow up and go to school, and also to see my daughters get married to someone they love and for them to wear a white wedding dress, something I was never allowed to do.
My story begins when I was 15 years old and I was raped by my sister’s husband. After this my family decided to marry me off to a 38-year old man. I refused, and I tried to tell my story, but my family would not listen, and to avoid the shame they went through with the marriage. This man treated me very badly, and after a while he kicked me out. After this, I had to provide for myself while living on the streets in Herat. When I was 17 years I traveled to Iran in the hope of a better life, but my life did not improve, and I could not get any help. I finally decided to go to Europe in the search of a better life. I suffer from epilepsy, and the stress of living on the streets makes me sicker. Unfortunately, I had to blur the photos of me, because I don’t want my family to see me and to know where I am.

We met Maryam and her two little daughters about a month ago in the Park, we knew people seek shelter there at night to get off the street. We now consider Maryam as a close friend and sister. Despite all she had to face in her life, she welcomes everyone with a warmth that we would have never expected. We tried to find support in different Organizations, especially because of Maryams health issues and her daughter’s. Unfortunately we didn’t receive the support that she desperately needs. That’s why we are turning to a wide Community of people who will read and listen to her story and hopefully are willing to help her fulfill her wishes and dreams of a better future for her and most importantly for her daughters. With this fundraiser we hope to cover her urgent basic needs, especially the medical costs, that due to her unique situation are very high.
We appreciate everyone who takes their time to listen to her story and supports and shares it!
