Update:
Since starting this GoFundMe, Herb underwent surgery and received 20 days of care at a nursing care facility (the max number of days Medicare will cover). While his medical team recommended that he stay longer to fully recover, he was not able to pay the cost per day (180/day), with his funds. Unfortunately, with medications and his storage fees, he could not afford to stay and was put back on the streets.
He is still in need of additional funds for housing options and urgent care visits for reoccurring stomach issues (gastritis, etc.). I am currently working with him to clean up and get rid of his existing storage units to free up additional income. However, he will need funds to get immediate housing options and/or money for down payment to secure any future apartment or room. I am also working with him to get additional medicare care coverage, since his current Medicare (Part A) does not cover urgent care appointments, primary care appointments, prescriptions, etc. Any funds can help go towards insurance coverage to get him the proper medical care he needs or cover any medical costs that come up.
For this reason, I extended the goal to $6,000. In hopes, that this will be enough to kickstart any housing options for Herb. For those who have previously donated or are currently donating, we are incredibly grateful and would appreciate if you could share this GoFundMe with others!
Thank you so much to everyone. As a more positive update, I was able to get Herb in touch with a case worker to help with resources, he is fully vaccinated, and has received new glasses!
Please see below for more of his story.

Over the last few years I have come to know - Herb - one of the nicest homeless in Granada Hills, CA. Herb Kingsland is a senior, 76 years old, a veteran, and has lived in Granada Hills for many years, without a home. Veteran Affairs provides very little and the amount given to him through his social security retirement only covers his costs of storage every month (which has only continued to increase in costs)- where he mainly keeps his clothing, bedding, and food. His storage unit is all he has.
I have opened this GoFundMe for Herb because he is in need of immediate help!
Last year, Herb visited the ER and was told he had to get surgery for a hernia. Unfortunately, since he is without a home, he is unable to go to his appointment, surgery, and through recovery (including attending follow-up appointments) without having his things stored securely.
He would like to raise $1,400 to pay for a monthly storage unit in Granada Hills, which would cover the costs of storage for about one year. Veteran Affairs will cover his medical costs, but he needs money to put his things (his cart with bedding) in storage and keep them safe as he attends all his medical appointments. Veteran Affairs can take many months to book appointments, schedule surgery, and make/attend follow-up visits. This is why Herb is asking for donations to cover at least one year of storage. Once he can put his things away safely - he will feel completely secure and able to take care of his health! Without constantly worrying about his belongings.
With the terrible weather (windy/hot/cold) a local senior should not have to withstand this, with ongoing medical concerns. Let us get Herb the help he needs and hit that $1400 goal & more if possible (for food too)! The more WE raise, the more resources we can give Herb for food and possible housing options.
I am asking to please donate what you can and help a local homeless senior get the medical care he needs. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration!
**He does not use drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. Money that does not go to his storage unit costs, will go towards food.**
