Hi,
My name is Jil and I am starting this Go Fund Me to support Holly Maw as she recovers from a terrible accident that left her with severe dental injuries after being hit by an e-bike.
Holly is a close friend of my daughter. They have known each other for more than ten years and she is a vibrant, thoughtful and hardworking 23-year-old who is only just beginning her adult life.
You may have recently seen Holly on A Current Affair, the national news program that reported on the growing concern around the use of high powered and modified e-bikes on public roads and footpaths. Holly’s experience was included in the report to illustrate the real consequences of these accidents, particularly for pedestrians who can suffer significant injuries yet have little recourse for compensation when the rider is not covered by an insurance framework. You can watch the news report here.
On the evening of 19 December, Holly was leaving the Harbord Hotel around 9pm. As she crossed the road she was struck by an e-bike rider, a 12-year-old boy who was doubling his mate. Holly has no memory of the accident itself.
The impact caused severe trauma to her mouth and face and shattered her front teeth.
Since the accident Holly has already undergone bone graft surgery, which now needs several months to heal before the next stage of reconstruction can begin.
The treatment still required includes full implant reconstruction, with an estimated cost of $38,000. So far Holly has already paid $5,500 for urgent treatment following the accident.
Because there is currently no clear insurance framework covering these high-powered e-bikes & police have advised the case cannot proceed due to the lack of footage, Holly has been left responsible for the cost of her own medical treatment from an accident she could not prevent.
In an unfortunate twist, on the evening the news story about Holly’s accident went to air, she was involved in a separate single car accident while driving to a friend’s house to watch the program. On the wet road on Wakehurst Parkway she lost control of her car and crashed. Thankfully she is okay, but her car is totaled and this has just added more stress during an already incredibly difficult time.
Like many young drivers, Holly carries third party insurance to protect others. Unfortunately, this type of cover does not insure her own vehicle, which means her car cannot be replaced through insurance.
To be clear, this fundraiser is not asking for financial support to replace Holly’s car. We are simply sharing the context of what has been a very difficult period for a young woman already dealing with the consequences from the E-Bike accident.
This Go Fund Me has been created specifically to help cover the cost of Holly’s dental reconstruction so she can rebuild her beautiful smile and move forward with her life, and as we know dental reconstruction is a long & expensive process. This support will help relieve the financial pressure so she can focus on healing and getting her life back on track.
Any contribution will make a meaningful difference. If you are unable to donate, sharing this page would also make a huge difference.
Thank you for supporting Holly.
In addition to helping Holly recover, many people have asked how they can support changes to the current laws around young e-bike riders. A petition has been started calling for these laws to be reviewed and strengthened to help prevent incidents like this from continuing to happen.
