My mom, Holly Jasso Stenson, has dedicated over half her life to caregiving for my sister, Chelsey. Chelsey was born with severe cerebral palsy, which required her to be under 24/7 care. Selflessly, my mom devoted nearly four decades to caregiving, putting aside her own career aspirations and dreams. She relinquished many aspects of life that we take for granted to make sure Chelsey had the utmost care and love. The mental, emotional, and physical toll of caregiving was immensely demanding; however, her perseverance was unshakable. Now, at 67, Holly is left to rebuild her life while grieving Chelsey. Her sacrifice is a testament to her compassion and commitment to caring for others. During this transition, she is processing a lifetime of grief and settling into a new chapter.

Unfortunately, despite 39 years of tenacious work as a caregiver and mother, she is left financially vulnerable due to not being eligible for retirement benefits under California’s caregiving program. After a lifetime of uncertainty and devotion to taking care of Chelsey, it is unjust for her to be fearful of what her future holds. All donations will help cover essential needs, including Chelsey’s funeral expenses, housing, medical and dental care, and food. Because of her lifelong self-sacrifice, these necessities were often put aside. Our family is grateful for the support during this time, which will help her immensely.

To say that my mom worked hard at taking care of Chelsey would be an understatement. She committed her entire being to prioritizing Chelsey’s health, comfort, and dignity. Every day for over 39 years, she spoon-fed Chelsey every meal. Doctors would suggest a feeding tube to make it easier on my mom, but she refused to deprive Chelsey of her greatest joy. Chelsey loved food, so my mom made sure that she was not going to lose her ability to eat by mouth. Her kindhearted determination to ensure Chelsey’s well-being displayed an insurmountable amount of resilience. She describes Chelsey’s love as greater than any sacrifice she endured. The self-care that one usually only does for themselves she did for Chelsey, often neglecting her own needs. After a life of putting others first, it is our goal to ensure that she can have the security and peace she more than deserves. We want her future to be filled with enjoying the little things, as she did with Chelsey.
